I was born on the 1st June 1926 in Los Angeles County Hospital, I was the third child to my mother Gladys Pearl. My father was unknown although my birth certificate states Martin Edward. My mother was mentally unstable, and as I had no father to turn to I spend much of my childhood in foster care. At eleven I moved in with my great Aunt Brunings in Compton.
I ran away several times as I was abused by one of her sons. I wasn't until 1945 that I finally escaped my own personal hell when age 19 I got my first job at Radioplane Munitions Factory and married for the first time. While working at Radioplane, the US Army Air Forces First Motion Picture Unit commanded by Captain Ronald Reagan, arrived to shoot morale boosting photos to strengthen the female war effort.
One of the photographers noticed me and I signed up as a model with Blue Book Modelling Agency working with Jean Harlow and Lana Turner. Soon enough I was talent spotted by 20th Century Fox. They choose the name Carole Lind for me, making my first credited role as a waitress in 'Dangerous Years' released in 1947
In 48 I received my first major role in Ladies of The Chorus, but it flopped and I was left penny less. I struggled for work and to make ends meet I returned to modelling posing nude for photographer Tom Kelley. Things started to look up when Director John Houston cast me in 'The Asphalt Jungle'.
Throughout my short and tragic life I have been known but the names Baker, Mortensen, Dougherty, DiMaggio and Miller. Despite dying at only 36 from an overdose, I am regarded as on of the greats for myroles in 'Niagara', 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' and 'Some Like It Hot'. What was my stage name ?
Answer
Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jeane Mortensen)
