I am 9 foot in diameter and 7 foot 6 inches high I weigh 13 tons. I replaced Great Edward and Great Tom.
I am encased in 850 cubic metres of stone, made up of 2600 cubic metres of brick. Constructed in September of 1843.
Cast by George Mears at the Whitechapel Foundry on the 10th April 1858, and replaced my original after a 1.2 metre crack appeared during testing. I am named after Sir Benjamin Hall the first commissioner for works during the 1850's.
First used on the 11th July 1859, however I was silenced in September of the same year after I too cracked. Eventually in 1863 I was fixed by Sir George Airy the Astronomer Royal, and at a total cost of £22,000 including installation, I have been heard ever since.
2009 saw the 150th anniversary of the Elizabeth Tower, the Great Clock and me, the Great Bell, but I am more fondly known as who. Who am I ?
